Anthropic's Claude Fable represents a step forward in model capability, but its data retention terms appear to have triggered an internal risk response at Microsoft. The company limited employee access while continuing to provision Claude Fable for select commercial products like GitHub Copilot and Foundry-indicating nuanced, context-dependent approvals based on product boundaries and contractual terms.
For enterprise procurement and security teams, this episode underscores a recurring friction point: vendor-imposed telemetry or retention that conflicts with corporate policies on IP protection, data residency, or regulatory compliance.
